Umbrella (a woman refuge shelter) opens up range of art forms.
Umbrella Gallery's contribution to the Pacific Festival is significant - Carol Bryan has organised a full day of arts events, from 11:am to 5:pm on Sunday.
Music, drama and videos and "performance art" will all be on show.
Featured will be Ture Sjolander, an artist who works in the medium of video, with his lecture "Art in the Past, Art in the Future".
He was thinking of cancelling his talk, "because art of the present is like art of the past: there has been no discovery, no pioneering, no development for 20 years".
Sjolanders questions whether universities can do anything for the arts, apart from building a bureaucratic empires.
Other comments from his talk include, "The size of Townsville can be measured as 14 days. In this time the standard smile of a politician planting a tree has been published three times. The news announcer at the local television station has changed her hairstyle 14 times, occupying the screen at the expence of world news.
